Construction of the new animal enclosures

Construction of the new animal enclosures on schedule

The new animal enclosures are expected to be ready in autumn 2024.

The construction work of the new animal enclosures began at FELIDA in autumn 2023. The main building will be equipped with 12 indoor and 6 outdoor enclosures, specially designed to take care of traumatised big cats that need intensive care.

The sanctuary provides specialist care for traumatised big cats. These animals do not immediately benefit from larger enclosures and need to build confidence in themselves and their caretakers first. Because the facilities are outdated we started building new animal enclosures in November 2023, with the aim of expanding our special care function. In new and more spacious facilities, FELIDA can provide the best care and to the highest quality standards for more big cats in need. The construction work on the new animal quarters is expected to be completed in Autumn 2024.

Frisian entrepreneurs Adema Architects and Jorritsma Bouw were deliberately chosen for the renovation of the new animal enclosures. Both contractors have extensive experience in large-scale construction projects and are also based in the northern part of the Netherlands. During the work, close consultations with the construction company are held daily to minimise any inconvenience to the animals. There are currently six animals at the sanctuary: lions Bobby, Elza, Nikola, Simba and Vasylyna, and tiger Tsezar.

"We keep a close eye on the animals. The renovation will soon allow us to provide even better care and accommodate more big cats. With the specially designed indoor and outdoor enclosures, we can provide intensive, specialised care for traumatised big cats to the highest quality standards. This way, we can help even more animals overcome their physical and mental traumas"
